South Koreans working to set up joint liaison office, hold joint events with North Korea

It is day two of a visit by South Korean officials to the now shuttered inter-Korean Kaesong Industrial Complex,… as they try to lay down the groundwork for establishing a joint liaison office between the two Koreas. <br />For the latest on this, we go live to our Unification Ministry correspondent Oh Jung-hee who's following the story for us. <br /><br /> Good morning, Semin.<br />17 South Korean government officials and staff from private sector firms are visiting the inter-Korean Kaesong Industrial Complex again today.<br /> They crossed the inter-Korean land border roughly an hour and a half ago.<br />The visiting staff include those from Seoul's unification ministry and private sector firm Hyundai Asan, which played a key role in establishing the industrial complex.<br />The team also visited the complex yesterday.<br /> They stayed there for a little over 7 hours and worked on draining the flooded basement of the inter-Korean interaction and cooperation office.<br />And with North Korean officials' help, the team also cleaned up and checked the electricity network at another building... where they plan to set up a temporary liaison office.<br />Today's work is expected to be similar to yesterday's.<br /> Just to give you a recap, the two Koreas agreed -- at their high-level talks early this month -- to set up the joint liaison office within the Kaesong Industrial Complex -- a factory park that was jointly run by the two Koreas.<br />But the complex needs renovation because it's been shut down since February 2016.<br /><br /> Jung-hee, we're hearing that there's another trip north of the border today -- this one by a South Korean civic group.<br />Tell us about that, too.<br /><br /> You're right.<br />15 South Koreans will travel to Pyongyang for a four-day-stay starting today... after receiving approval from Seoul's unification ministry yesterday.<br /> These people are from a civic group that was formed in 2005... to implement the June 15th joint declaration -- the first-ever summit agreement between the two Koreas.<br />They are to meet with authorities in Pyongyang to discuss inter-Korean joint events and ways to boost civil interactions.<br />This... as leaders of South and North Korea agreed in late April... to hold joint events on major occasions observed by both sides.<br /> That's all I have for now, but I'll have more updates for our later newscasts.<br />Semin. <br />
