At least 48 dead in overloaded bus crash in Himalayas

Nearly 50 people have died in northern India after a bus fell into a gorge in the Himalayan foothills.<br />About a dozen others are said to have been injured.<br />For more on this and other news around the world we turn to our Ro Aram….<br />Aram… what's the latest?<br /><br /> Well Mark… Officials said Sunday that the death toll has now reached at least 48.<br /> The 28-seater bus, travelling from Bhoan to Ramnagar, was said to have been overloaded with about 60 people onboard.<br />Officials said the driver had lost control and swerved off the road, eventually plummeting into a 200-meter gorge in the mountainous district of Pauri Garhwal.<br />Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted his condolences saying authorities are providing all possible assistance at the accident site.<br />As of yet it is unclear what caused the crash, but bad weather and a large pothole are being considered possible causes.<br />The chief minister of the state of Uttarakhand said a magisterial inquiry has been ordered.<br />Road accidents are frequent in India, with poorly maintained vehicles and traffic laws, as well as reckless driving. <br />
