This is the chilling moment a woman has an encounter with a baby cobra in the unlikeliest of places.

Sagarika Sundaray, 23, put her hand inside a bag, to get some rice out for cooking.

She felt something cold and moving inside and instinctively pulled her hand out.

When she shined a torch inside she saw a baby cobra slithering around inside the bag. Surprised by the intense light it took refuge in a cup which had been kept inside to measure rice.

The week-old cobra, which had probably hatched in a nearby field, had moved in looking for a dark and cosy place to live.

The incident took place in Bhubaneswar in India’s eastern state of Odisha, on 29 June.

Sagarika, who shares the flat with her friends, called Snake Helpline whose secretary Subhendu Mallik rushed to the spot. He pulled out the snake with the help of a stick and released it later in a forest.

Mallik said: “Baby cobras have fully grown venom apparatus and can kill humans with their bite. She was lucky to escape.”
