<p>A ruptured gas line</a> at Martin Place in Sydney’s central business district saw parts of the area evacuated around 10:30pm on Friday, July 6.</p><p>Firefighters were still working</a> to shut off the leak at 7:30am on Saturday.</p><p>Social media users in the area described a foul smell</a> in the area, with one Twitter user calling it “a tidal wave of gas”</a>. Another person told 9news.com.au that the sound of the leak was “deafening”</a>.</p><p>Sydney Morning Herald reported</a> the leak was caused by night-time construction workers on Castlereagh Street who accidentally breached a high-pressure gas line.</p><p>NSW Police urged</a> people planning to go into the city on Saturday morning to seek alternate routes.
