Residents in southern India rush to fish coconuts in flooded river

As rivers overflow due to heavy monsoon rains, people are rushing to net coconuts in Kerala, India.<br /><br />Swelling rivers have flooded agricultural farms in many districts shaking up mature coconuts from their trees. <br /><br />The powerful current then sweeps away the nuts, which fall into the water. <br /><br />Residents of many villages in Kottayam district saw the husky nuts floating in the local Moovattupuzha river and rushed to pluck them from the water. <br /><br />A resident of Kottayam, Lijo Verghese, 28, said: “There is good demand for coconuts now. Netting them is as lucrative as catching fish.” <br /><br />“Seeing the rush to catch coconuts, a few enterprising businessmen are selling net baskets to catch them,” he added.
