This is the touching moment an orangutan bonds with a baby through the glass at a zoo.

Footage captured on July 23 in Louisville, Kentucky, shows mother Courtney with her baby son, Eli, in front of the orangutan exhibition at the city's zoo.

The curious ape swings down from a branch to take a closer look at Eli.

Then, he sticks out a finger and touches the glass where Eli's hand is placed.

The orangutan stares intently at Eli, clearly amazed.

For Courtney, the ape's calm reaction was a relief.

She told Newsflare: "It took me 13 years to get pregnant. Things got complicated towards the end of the pregnancy and left me really worried but I ended up giving birth to a happy and healthy baby boy.

"Even though he won't technically remember his first time [at] the zoo, I knew it was important for him to see animals and start learning now as he is already so alert at almost three months old.

"Crying and scared at this big hairy creature, I tried comforting him while living in this really precious moment that I'm so glad I captured so he and others will be able to witness as well.

"Animals are truly a gift."
