Temperatures in Spain and Portugal this week could top 48 degrees Celsius,... setting a new record for continental Europe,... after Athens first reached the landmark figure in 1977.<br /> The two Iberian countries have, so far, recorded all-time highs of 47 degrees.<br />UK weather authorities have warned that inland areas of Spain and Portugal are likely to be hotter than the coastal regions this week.<br />The south and east of France are also reeling from the unrelenting heat,... with a heat wave warning enforced across the area.<br /> The French weather agency said southern parts of the country will come close to hitting record temperatures in the next few days.<br />Holidaymakers have been warned to take extra caution amid the hot spell, especially those traveling with young children and elderly people. <br />
