Man Rescued From Submerged Car Amid Concerns of Lynchburg Dam Failure

<br /> <p>A man was rescued from a car submerged in floodwater in Lynchburg, Virginia, on August 2, after torrential rain hit the area, filling nearby College Lake beyond capacity and threatening its dam with collapse.</p><p>The flash flood warning in the area was extended</a> to Friday evening, although meteorologists said the worst of the rain had passed.</p><p>The National Weather Service</a> said the dam, west of downtown near Lynchburg College, was “above capacity” and there was some uncontrolled flow. By Friday, officials said</a> a conditions assessment had concluded the dam was stable, so they were considering options to further stabilize it, including opening the sluice to reduce water flow.</p><p>The service warned that if a complete dam failure occurs, “the water depth in Lynchburg could exceed 17 feet in seven minutes,” according to WTVR</a>.</p><p>The Lynchburg Department of Emergency Services said the threat of the dam failing</a> caused evacuations for residents in the Blackwater Creek Trail area.
