South Korea's defense ministry has approved a extension request by the special independent probe team looking into illegal political interference by a recently dissolved military intelligence unit.
A ministry official told Arirang News Tuesday that,... with the month-long extension,... the probe will continue until at least mid-September.
The investigation can be extended by a month, up to three times.
The probe team requested the ministry for the extension earlier this month.
The team has been jointly working with civilian prosecutors as they scour confidential documents that were drawn up by the now-defunct Defense Security Command.
The command allegedly drew up contingency plans to impose martial law in case protests turned violent following a court ruling on former president Park Geun-hye's impeachment.
