I've chosen to drive my Mercedes-AMG GT R for the 2018 Gumball 3000 supercar rally from London to Tokyo, and here are 8 reasons why I think it's the perfect car for the job! With the grid featuring all sorts of supercars, hypercars, track toys, classics and anything on 4 wheels; what actually makes the best car for the purpose?<br /><br />Since taking delivery of the AMG GT R last year, I haven't been able to stop driving it. The car features a brilliant balance of performance and speed with comfort and practicality that make it a great machine to use for many purposes and daily driving. In no particular order, my 8 reasons to choose the GT R on the Gumball 3000 are:<br /><br />1) It's a special and rare car! Let's be honest, on the Gumball 3000 you want something that's able to hold its own on the grid.<br /><br />2) Inside you can find great storage; from the cup holders to door pouches - ideal for cameras, water bottles and things you have on the move.<br /><br />3) With a mid-front V8 and rear wheel drive; quite literally it's a GT or a Grand Tourer - set up for long distance travelling and road trips.<br /><br />4) Keeping gear fully juiced up is critical on the rally; you never know when you might need a fully charged phone or camera and the car has fast ports to help with this<br /><br />5) Being a hatchback, the rear compartment is easily accessible by the occupants on the move - saving time if you need to grab something without needing to stop and get out.<br /><br />6) Being a Mercedes product, it's loaded with tech like the 9-stage traction control if you fancy lighting up the rear tyres, or the radar system for cruise control and safety up front.<br /><br />7) With a RENNtech downpipe, it's noisy! Well, any AMG product tends to sound rather good, but this one is just incredible.<br /><br />8) It also happens to be really very, very fast. Having driven this car up to 205mph (331km/h) myself I can vouch for that! Just what you need on the Gumball 3000.<br /><br />So there we have it, my 8 reasons for the AMG GT R as the perfect car to drive on the Gumball 3000.
