Part of WWII US Destroyer, Sunk Off Alaska, Discovered After Nearly 75 Years

<p>The stern of the USS Abner Read broke away when it was hit by a mine off the Alaskan coast in 1943. Its location remained unknown until a team from Project Recover found it on the sea bed in July.</p><p>The ship survived the blast and was towed for repairs, but the incident led to the loss of 71 sailors</a>.</p><p>Project Recovery, a NOAA-supported team from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and University of Delaware, found the ship. After the wreckage was identified, the team aboard the recovery ship cast a wreath into the sea in memory of the lost sailors, as seen in this video.</p><p>The wreckage can also be seen, encrusted in sea life.
