At Least 8,000 Lawsuits Now Directed at
Bayer's Monsanto The number of lawsuits in the U.S. brought against Bayer’s Monsanto has jumped to about 8,000. The German drugmaker is bracing for years of legal issues over alleged cancer risks from its line
of weedkillers. On August 10, Monsanto was ordered to pay $289 million in damages in its first U.S. lawsuit. Since the ruling, Bayer shares have dropped over 10 percent. Bayer has said it will petition the judge to reverse the jury’s verdict and “if necessary” challenge the ruling. Bayer previously disclosed 5,200 such lawsuits against Monsanto, which it acquired in June.
