<p>Severe thunderstorms tore through parts of New South Wales on Friday, September 7, leaving areas across Sydney covered with a blanket of hailstones.</p><p>The Bureau of Meteorology issued severe thunderstorm warnings</a> and warned of heavy rain, flash flooding and large hailstones in a number of regions across the state.</p><p>Lightning strikes at a rate of 1,000 per hour were recorded</a> in the 50 kilometre radius around Sydney causing delays at the airport</a>, and flash flooding caused disruptions</a> to the rail network.</p><p>Bankstown saw 58 millilitres of rain in an hour, according to ABC</a>.
