President Trump has signed an executive order authorizing sanctions against foreigners who meddle in U.S. elections.
Wednesday's order comes amid mounting pressure from lawmakers and some members of the public to beef up election security.
Trump has often been criticized for his response to suspected Russian election in the 2016 presidential election, where he sided with Moscow over his own intelligence officials.
The order instructs the intelligence community to monitor and report on attempts to disrupt election infrastructure, as well as propaganda.
It also authorizes the sanctioning of any individual, company or country found guilty of such actions.
With under two months left until the midterm elections, U.S. officials say they are keeping a close eye on countries, such as Russia, North Korea, China and Iran.
The order drew immediate criticism from both Republican and Democratic lawmakers as too little, too late.
