Moment firefighters pull out little girl from 25ft-deep borewell in India

Firefighters rescued a girl from a 25-feet borewell in southern India on Sunday (September 23). <br /><br />Three firefighters responded quickly and managed to rescue the girl within two hours.<br /><br />The incident occurred at a village in the Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu, a state in southern India, on September 23.<br /><br />K Sivadarshini, 2, was playing in front of her house when she slipped into a newly dug borewell.<br /><br />Eyewitnesses said the mouth of the borewell had been covered with a stone slab, which gave in when the little girl stepped on it. <br /><br />Her parents heard her cries and shouted for help, prompting a neighbour to call the fire and rescue department.<br /><br />A team of 20 firefighters rushed to the village and launched the rescue operation.<br /><br />They found that the girl was stuck at a depth of 15 feet and tried to pull her out using a rope. <br /><br />When that failed to work, they dug a pit next to the borewell and reached the girl by making a passage to link the borewell to the pit.<br /><br />As an anxious crowd watched the firefighters worked furiously and brought the girl out.<br /><br />Nagapattinam District Fire Officer- in-charge K Sathiyakeerthi said: “We had organised oxygen supply to ensure that the girl’s condition was stable. The entire rescue [was] over within two hours.”<br /><br />The girl was in shock but had no injuries. She was taken to the Nagapattinam Government Hospital where the doctors are treating her.<br /><br />“Officials should ensure that all borewells are closed properly so that no child is made to go through this again,” said Muthu Kumar, a resident of a nearby village.
