Typhoon Kong-rey approaches Korean Peninsula

Typhoon Kong-rey is expected to hit South Korea this weekend, and forecasters say residents are advised to brace for any possible damage.<br /> Yoon Jung-min reports. <br /> Typhoon Kong-rey is forecast to pass across the southern parts of the Korean peninsula this weekend, bringing torrential rain and strong winds.<br /><br />According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, Jeju Island will see up to 500 millimeters of rain while the nation's eastern and southern regions will see up to 300 millimeters. Kong-rey is expected to bring rain to the rest of the country as well.<br /><br />The weather agency advises residents to brace for any damage caused by the heavy showers and gusty winds.<br /><br /> On Friday, Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon presided over a meeting at the country’s disaster control center with the safety ministry, the meteorological administration and other relevant ministries to call on them to fully prepare for the storm.<br /><br />Lee called for the prevention of casualties and the inspections of facilities. The safety ministry also issued a warning alert.<br /><br /> Currently, typhoon advisories have been issued for the waters near Jeju Island due to strong winds and surging waves.<br />The wave overflow may flood coastal roads in the east and south of the country and special caution is required in those regions.<br /><br /> The weather agency added that the storm will gradually weaken by Sunday and shift course toward the northern part of Japan.<br />Yoon Jung-min, Arirang News. <br />
