X-Files star and campaigner Gillian Anderson delivered a 300,000-signature petition to the foreign office calling for a massive chunk of the Antarctic to become protected.<br /><br />The actress, flanked by Greenpeace supporters and a statue of an Emperor penguin in London, delivered the petition to the government demanding the establishment of an Antarctic Ocean Sanctuary in the Weddell Sea.<br /><br />The proposed sanctuary could be as large as 1.11m square miles – seven times the size of the UK.<br /><br />Supporters of the proposal say it will provide an area for wildlife such as penguins and whales to recover from overfishing, climate change and pollution.<br /><br />It comes after a landmark UN report delivered an ultimatum on climate change, warning against a 1.5 degrees Celsius rise in global temperatures before 2030.
