NEW YORK — The New York Police Department has recalled nearly 3,000 body cameras after one of them "exploded," according to a statement from the department.

According to NBC News, a Staten Island NYPD officer was wearing the Vievu LE-5 body camera on Saturday night when he noticed the device started smoking.
The cop then took off the body cam, which then blew up. Luckily, no one was hurt. Unfortunately, there was no video of the incident.
According to the NYPD statement, "the incident revealed a potential for the battery inside the camera to ignite. The cause and scope of the defect are currently being investigated."
According to the NYPD, 2,990 of the 15,500 body cams in use by New York's Finest were LE-5 models.
All officers wearing the Vievu LE-5 models were told to immediately remove them and return them back to their commands, according to police.
For now, those 2,990 officers will be without body cams. Hopefully they'll be able to stay out of trouble.
