Taiwan to hold live-fire drills in Spratly Islands next month

TAIWAN — Taiwan is planning to stage a three-day live fire drill on Taiping Island in the South China Sea, reports The South China Morning Post.<br /><br />Taiwan reportedly plans to hold the drills between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. from November 21 to November 23.<br /><br />The exercise would be held within 5 nautical miles of Taiping island, which is part of the highly disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea.<br /><br />The drills will involve firing into the sea and the air with 40 millimeter grenade machine guns along with other weapons in the area surrounding Taiping Island.<br /><br />Fishing vessels, aircrafts and other vessels are advised to not be in the area during those three days.<br /><br />The Spratly Islands are a group of disputed islands in the South China Sea and are currently being claimed by China, the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Brunei, Indonesia as well as Taiwan.
