UAE says academic Hedges treated 'fairly', to protect relationship with Britain

<br /> According to Reuters, the United Arab Emirates sentenced a British academic to a life sentence for spying.<br />Matthew Hedges was arrested at Dubai International Airport in May on the suspicion of espionage.<br />The 31-year-old spent six months in solitary confinement, before he was released on bail last month.<br />Prosecutors said that Hedges confessed to spying for the British government, however, the academic and his wife have repeatedly denied the allegations.<br />UAE officials stated Hedge was treated fairly by their constitution, adding that he was provided with translators for signing documents.<br />A statement from the Gulf state’s foreign ministry said Hedge was not asked to sign documents he could not understand. <br />
