Mystery Paralysis Illness
Hits Record Number of
Children in US 311 reports of acute flaccid myelitis
(AFM) have been reported in 2018. The illness causes kids to
lose the ability to move their
face, neck, back, arms or legs. The wave of U.S. cases
spiked in September and
have tapered off since then. The disease
has spread
across 36 states. Texas and Colorado have
reported the most cases
with 21 and 15, respectively. This year,
no one has
died from AFM. But the illness has
claimed lives in the past. Doctors from the
Centers for Disease
Control estimate Dr. Nancy Messonnier, CDC, via CBS News
