China has urged Canada to “correct its mistake” by releasing Huawei CFO Sabrina Meng Wanzhou, who was arrested in Vancouver on December 1 at the request of the US government.
The Chinese foreign ministry described Meng’s arrest as a modern version of “The Emperor’s New Clothes” story about weavers who convince others that nonexistent garments are “invisible.”
Meng is free on bail pending a court appearance on possible extradition to the US where she could face a 30-year sentence if convicted on sanctions violations. Since her arrest, China has detained two Canadians, accusing them of national security breaches.
