View from flight shows eerie blue grow lighting up New York City sky after transformer explosion

A fire at Con Ed power plant caused the New York City skies to be covered in a neon blue hue Thursday night after a transformer exploded at the utility company's facility in Astoria.<br /><br />According to local media, the blast happened shortly after 9 pm. New Yorkers turned to social media to post pictures and videos of the strange phenomenon.<br /><br />The filmer was flying into Newark after spending the holidays with family when she shot this from her airplane window. "I was so in awe I almost didnt grab my phone and capture it but I'm glad I did so I could prove it looked straight out of a movie!" She said.<br /><br />The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) shut down nearby LaGuardia for an inspection after the downed transformer caused power outages at the airport.<br /><br />There have been no injuries, the NYPD reported.
