According to Reuters, the annual tradition of watching a huge ball drop from a pole on in Times Square in New York started in 1907. <br />The current New Year's ball has been in use since 2008.<br />Reuters reports that the glittering ball is a LED studded sphere, created by Waterford Crystal and Philips Lighting. <br />It weighs nearly 12 thousand pounds is 12 feet tall. <br />It also sits on the roof of One Times Square all year long, awaiting New Years Eve. <br />
