Hawaii May Pass a Ban on Cigarette Sales to Those Under 100 A new proposed bill in the state of
Hawaii calls for the phasing out of
cigarettes within the next few years. This legislation would raise the legal
minimum age to purchase cigarettes each
year for the next five years. That means the minimum age would be 30 by 2020, 40 by 2021, 50 by 2022 and 60 by 2023. By 2024, cigarette purchasers would have to be
100 years old to purchase the tobacco product. The law’s staggered rollout is intended to allow time for the state to adjust to the lost cigarette tax revenue. These age limits would not
apply to products such as cigars,
e-cigarettes and chewing tobacco. The bill’s sponsor, representative Richard Creagan, believes cigarette addiction in the state
must be addressed. Richard Creagan via Hawaii Tribune-Herald.
