CLEVELAND, OHIO — Research published in the Journal of Physiology details a newly found form of neural communication in which neurons that are not connected can send signals to each other.

According to the study, the new type of neural communication is able to move from a neuron in one section of the brain to another.

Scientists from Case Western Reserve University were testing brain waves in hippocampal slices taken from the brains of decapitated mice.

According to the study, researchers found that an electrical field was generated at a gradual recurring interval in their sampled brain tissue. This activated nearby cells.

The electric field was also found to stimulate neurons even if there was a gap in the brain tissue.
