A letter from the Centre asking the Telangana government to entrust special responsibilities to the Governor in maintenance of law and order in Hyderabad triggered a confrontation between the Centre and the State on Friday night.

Taking exception to the Centre’s directive, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao asked Chief Secretary Rajeev Sharma to write back to the Centre rejecting the direction.

Friday night’s developments are likely to find an echo in Parliament with the TRS members planning to raise the issue on Monday in both Houses.

Mr. Rao is also using this opportunity to rope in non-NDA State governments to oppose the Centre’s move, which he described as “unconstitutional and against the federal spirit.”
