Cautious optimism over second HIV ‘cure’

News that a second patient infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has been cured of the virus that causes Aids has raised hope among other patients and researchers.<br />A London man appears to be free of the virus that causes Aids, HIV-1, after a stem cell transplant, according to research published on February 5, 2019. The case was the second time the bone marrow transplant successfully resulted in sustained remission of the infection.<br />The allogeneic stem cell transplantation was done to cure the patient’s stage-four Hodgkin’s lymphoma. It followed the first reported case of the procedure being used to clear HIV in a patient – Timothy Ray Brown. The American was treated in Germany in 2007, and tests show he remains free of HIV.<br />
