Buddhist monks in Japan take part in a fire-walking tradition where they must walk across a stretch of burning coal. <br /><br />During the Hiwatari festival at a temple on Mount Takao, west of Tokyo, <br />the monks take part in this annual ritual to pray for world peace, good health and receive protection from misfortune.<br /><br />Once the flames are extinguished and the temperature of the coal has reduced, visitors can take part in the ceremony.<br /><br />The annual event is held on the second Sunday of March.
