Five-metre-long procession of caterpillars march along path in Spain

2019-03-14 3 Dailymotion

A five-meter long line of caterpillars marched along a pathway in eastern Spain in this oddly engrossing video.

The caterpillars are doing this to find soft ground to bury in during February time when the footage was shot, where they will re-emerge in the Spain summer as a beautiful silk moth.

The procession is lead by the lead caterpillar which leaves a pheromone behind that the others follow, nose-to-tail.

These caterpillars can fire out harpoon-shaped urticating hairs, sticking to the victim's skin, which can lead to excessive itching and in some cases anaphylactic shock.

The filmer says he: "had a few itches where the hairs from the caterpillars had hooked in my skin."
