Pedestrian Deaths in the US<br />at Highest in 30 Years In 2018, an estimated 6,227<br />pedestrians were killed in traffic. That’s a striking rise compared to 2008,<br />where a total of 4,109 pedestrians were killed. A report by the Governors Highway<br />Safety Association (GHSA) cites alcohol use,<br />speeding and unsafe infrastructure as the<br />biggest contributing factors. Jonathan Adkins, executive director of GHSA, noted that while<br />car safety may be increasing, pedestrians are just as susceptible to harm. Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia and Texas account for<br />half of the pedestrian deaths in the U.S., with Florida being the deadliest. Florida is making strides to improve pedestrian safety,<br />having invested $100 million into improving lighting<br />and overhauling its roadway design manual. They have also put a pedestrian<br />and bicycle safety plan into place,<br />hoping to improve pedestrian safety.
