문대통령, 한미정상회담서 남북관계 돌파구 마련할까?

Following the no-deal summit in Hanoi,... talks between the two Koreas have also been deadlocked.
With Presidents Moon and Trump scheduled to meet, attention now turns to what the South Korean president can do to facilitate the nuclear dialogue and get inter-Korean relations back on track.
Our Park Hee-jun reports. There's guarded optimism in Seoul about restarting dialogue between the two Koreas.
According to a senior Blue House official on Friday,... no official talks have taken place between the two Koreas since the summit in Hanoi.
The North is believed to be evaluating that meeting and its role in it.
Although it's too early to discuss another inter-Korean summit,... the official expressed hope that a meeting will take place soon,... and that things on the Korean Peninsula will move forward.
But that depends largely on to what degree President Moon in Washington succeeds in facilitating the nuclear talks.
The Hanoi summit failed because the U.S. was adamant on lifting sanctions only after North Korea's complete denuclearization,... whereas the North insisted on step-by-step denuclearization and sanctions relief.
Right after that meeting, President Moon was asked by President Trump to take up the mediator role, so he'll be looking for a clear solution.
That will also be key in terms of inter-Korean projects -- moving ahead to reopen the Gaeseong Industrial Complex and resume the Mount Geumgangsan tours -- both of which are currently blocked by sanctions.
The upcoming summit also indicates that "top-down" diplomacy-- that is, between the leaders themselves -- is still very much intact... despite criticism that such an approach proved its limitations in Hanoi.
The Blue House official says such diplomacy between the leaders is what brought the two Koreas together thus far... and that it will continue.
And how that turns out... will also determine the future of inter-Korean relations.
Park Hee-jun, Arirang News.
