Denuclearization developments a year after Panmunjeom Declaration

2019-04-25 1 Dailymotion

There has been a definite shift in the momentum for peace on the Korean Peninsula since the signing of Panmujeom Declaration last April.
Our Kim Mok-yeon gives us an overview on the developments over the past year.
Almost a year has passed since the leaders of the two Korea's signed the Panmunjeom Declaration, the symbolic confirmation that the two sides share the same goal of heading toward a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula.
But questions have been raised on the actual progress of the implementation of the deal.
The past year has seen historic meetings... South Korean President Moon Jae-in met the North's Kim Jong-un three times,... and Kim also met U.S. President Donald Trump on two separate occasions.
These meetings contributed to easing the tension surrounding the peninsula, with North Korea making a remarkable statement in September, reaffirming its willingness to denuclearize.
"We agreed to work toward making the Korean Peninsula a peaceful land without any nuclear weapons or nuclear threats."
And it's been more than just words from the North... Pyeongyang has shown its willingness for denuclearization through actions as well.
"We should be aware that Kim Jong-un made several practical and concrete moves toward denuclearization. Over the past year, North Korea completely halted its missile and nuclear activities.
It also dismantled its Punggye-ri nuclear test site and some parts of the Dongchang-ri missile launch site."
Meanwhile, South Korea's role in the denuclearization process has changed dramatically.
"Before, South Korea was not considered as a direct party of the denuclearization talks. Traditionally, the talks were only considered a problem between Washington and Pyeongyang. But after the Pyeongyang Joint Declaration in September, Seoul has now officially secured its role as a state party."
Experts say expectations may have been too high for the speed of the denuclearization process over the last year,... but the progress that has been made is significant.
Kim Mok-yeon, Arirang News.
