Japan's Emperor Akihito Stepping Down From the Throne The 85-year-old is the first to abdicate from <br />the country's royal position in over 200 years. He cites problems with his health as the main reason for the decision. Emperor Akihito, via 2016 televised speech Crown prince Naruhito, the monarch's <br />first born son, will take over on May 1. When his reign ends <br />this week, so will <br />Akihito's Heisei era. The 59-year-old Naruhito's <br />Reiwa era will then begin. Akihito became Japan's <br />125th emperor back in 1989. Akihito took over for his father, Hirohito, who led<br /> Japan against the U.S. during World War II. Since his reign, he has broken <br />several traditions of previous emperors, including being the first to <br />marry outside of royalty in <br />1959 to Michiko Shōda. He was also the first to visit China and make a televised address to the people of Japan. Throughout his reign, Akihito <br />was known for his "down to earth" <br />nature and accessibility.
