NASA Mission Failures<br />Due to Faulty Aluminum Scam An aluminum scam of over 19 years<br />by Sapa Profiles has been found to be<br />behind two failed missions by NASA. The failure of the Orbiting Carbon Observatory in<br />2009 and the Glory satellite in 2011 were previously<br />believed to be due to nose cone malfunctions. An investigation by the Department of Justice has<br />revealed that Sapa Profiles altered test results and<br />falsified certification for their aluminum products. The company admitted to altering results related<br />to the metal’s strength and reliability under pressure. NASA, via statement Years of scientific work were lost as a result of<br />the fraud, as well as more than $700 million. Sapa Profiles parent company, Norse Hydro ASA,<br />has agreed to pay a $46 million fine and is no longer<br />able to contract with the federal government.
