Drinking California Tap Water
May Raise Risk of Cancer The Environmental Working Group
recently conducted a study of 2,737
community water systems in California. They calculated that the health
impact of contaminants could cause
over 15,000 new cases of cancer. The study found traces of chemicals such as
arsenic, hexavalent chromium and disinfection
byproducts in the various water systems. Trace amounts of these contaminants
are regulated on federal and state
levels and allowed in the water. However, senior scientist
Tasha Stoiber found that
85% of cancer risk is due
to their cumulative effect. Tasha Stoiber,
via Guardian The study found arsenic to be the biggest risk
factor in communities of less than 1,000 people. The California Environmental Protection
Agency is currently reviewing the study.
