Maine Becomes First State <br />to Ban Styrofoam Governor Janet Mills signed <br />the bill into law on April 30. The law begins in 2021 and anyone who <br />breaks it will pay a penalty of $100. Besides styrofoam, plastic beverage stirrers have also been <br />issued a ban. The Natural Resources Council of Maine <br />says that styrofoam containers are one <br />of the country's most discarded items. In Maine alone, over 250 million items <br />that contain styrofoam are used annually.
