Stare down 245-foot drop on world's tallest dive coaster

VAUGHAN, CANADA — Heads up, roller coaster thrill seekers! The longest, fastest, and tallest dive roller coaster in the world is now officially open in Ole Canada.

Unlike your grandma's boring old roller coaster, a dive coaster is what designers Bolliger & Mabillard describe as a "straight vertical drop, with riders facing down."

CNN Travel reports that Canada Wonderland's new coaster, named Yukon Striker, has a late 1800s gold rush theme. Emphasis on rush since this baby runs at 80 miles per hour on 1,105 meters of track — equivalent to the length of about 12 football fields.

The Striker features floorless seating, so riders can see absolutely everything as they're turned upside down on no less than four inversions.

The pièce de résistance, though, is the 'hold and dive' on the 90-degree drop. For 3 seconds, riders are dangled over 245 feet of abyss before being plunged into an underwater tunnel, then back up a 360-degree loop.

Yeah, this coaster is intense, and at least for those who can handle it — not to be missed. But if you're too chicken, there's always the merry-go-round.
