Bong Joon-ho's 'Parasite' receives 8 minute standing ovation at Cannes

칸영화제 달군 봉준호 '기생충'…8분간 기립박수•환호<br /><br />A huge moment for South Korean film director Bong Joon-ho Tuesday night at the Cannes Film Festival.<br />He got an eight-minute standing ovation for his latest film 'Parasite'.<br />Our Kim Da-mi reports. <br /> For 8 minutes straight on Tuesday night, the audience at the Cannes Grand Theatre Lumiere was on its feet, clapping and cheering for South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho and his masterpiece 'Parasite'. <br />Known for socially conscious films like 'The Host' and 'Okja', Bong described himself a genre movie director who doesn't like to follow the rules of genre films. <br />"I don't like to follow the conventions or codes for genre films, I try to convey messages about society through these broken codes." <br />'Parasite' portrays the story of a poor family getting involved with a wealthy family after their son works as a tutor for the rich family's daughter. <br />Renowned South Korean actors Song Kang-ho, Cho Yeo-jeong and Lee Sun-kyun star in the film.<br />"Mr. Bong always has a quite keen eye when he analyzes society, this shows in all his films. In 'Parasite' in particular, we can see the whole evolution, the development of Korean cinema." <br />Presenting for the fifth time at Cannes, Bong is making his second attempt to win the Palme d'Or in the main competition section. <br />He previously tried to win the prestigious award with 'Okja' in 2017. <br />The winner will be announced on the 25th, the last day of the 72nd edition of the film festival.<br />Called "giddy" and "brilliant" by film magazine IndieWire,...'Parasite' will be released on May 30th in South Korea.<br />Kim Da-mi, Arirang News. <br />
