‘After Maria’ Documentary<br />Sparks Major Backlash Netflix’s release of ‘After Maria’<br />has prompted a number of online<br />petitions demanding its removal. The documentary showcases the stories of<br />three woman forced to leave Puerto Rico<br />after the devastation of Hurricane Maria. According to a change.org petition with over<br />20,000 signatures, the film does not accurately<br />portray the “suffering of millions of Puerto Ricans.” Another petition claims the documentary<br />“disrespects the honor, values and working<br />spirit” of the affected Puerto Rican people. ‘After Maria’ director Nadia Hallgren has not<br />responded to the petitions, but previously spoke<br />about how they chose to structure the film. Nadia Hallgren, via ‘City<br />University of New York’ Netflix also refused to comment when<br />asked by NBC, saying “the filmmaker<br />will not be doing interviews at this time.”
