Flooding on the Mississippi River Longest in Nearly a Century The National Weather Service says<br />the flooding hasn't been this bad since 1927. That was the year of the "Great Flood," which the most destructive occurrence <br />of its kind in U.S. history. Due to record amounts of rain and snow melting in the spring, current flooding <br />has affected eight states. Because of climate change, downpours have jumped nearly 40% in the Midwest since the 1990s. In the central part of the country, <br />water levels are above flood stages <br />in almost 400 river gauges. Over 70 of them report major flooding<br />while another 105 report moderate flooding. So far, there have been no official fatalities <br />due to the Mississippi River's overflow.
