Government to step up measures to prevent African Swine Fever outbreak in S. Korea

Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon is calling for all out efforts to prevent an outbreak of the highly contagious African Swine Fever in South Korea,... especially after the disease was reported in North Korea.<br />Speaking at a meeting with cabinet ministers on Wednesday,... Lee said the government will seek to reduce the wild pig population nationwide,... as they could carry the virus across the border.<br />Lee noted that wild pigs can travel as far as 15 kilometers a day, on land and water.<br />He said quarantine and disinfection measures will be stepped up along the border,... as well as at gateways and ports.<br />He added the government has strengthened penalties for people that bring banned livestock into the country.<br />Lee also said local farms will be banned from feeding their pig leftover foodstuff.<br />There's currently no vaccine for African Swine Fever,... but the disease does not affect humans.<br />
