North Korea remains silent despite President Moon's calls to restart talks

During his week-long tour of Northern Europe,... President Moon, on multiple occasions, called for the resumption of dialogue between the two Koreas as well as between North Korea and the United States.<br />As the South Korean leader plays up the possibility of a back-to-back meeting between the North's Kim Jong-un and himself to be followed by his summit with U.S. President Donald Trump later this month... Pyeongyang remains silent.<br />Even though President Moon has made crystal clear that the ball is now in North Korea's court.<br />Park Hee-jun has this report.<br />Throughout his three-nation tour to Northern Europe last week,... President Moon Jae-in expressed optimism toward resuming talks between South and North Korea,... as well as between North Korea and the U.S.<br />He said efforts to revive dialogue with the North are ongoing,... raising hopes of some kind of a breakthrough.<br /><br />President Moon repeatedly said that another inter-Korean summit needs to take place within this month.<br /><br />June 12, 2019 Norway<br />"President Trump is scheduled to visit South Korea at the end of June. If possible, I think it's desirable that I meet Chairman Kim Jong-un before that. But that is Chairman Kim's decision."<br /><br />He also called on Pyeongyang and Washington to meet for lower-level talks,... to move forward in their nuclear negotiations.<br /><br />June 15, 2019 Sweden<br />"To make concrete steps forward in North Korea-U.S. negotiations,... I believe the two sides need to hold working-level talks first."<br /><br />But despite the repeated messages, the North is yet to respond.<br />North Korea appears to be more cautious since its summit with the U.S. in Hanoi ended prematurely.<br /><br />Attention is on U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun's rare, week-long stay in Seoul next week.<br />There is a possibility that during his stay, the two sides could sit down for working-level negotiations at Panmunjeom,... which could help denuclearization talks gain momentum.<br />And with a series of meetings between relevant parties planned during the upcoming G20 Summit in Japan,... the month of June could be a chance to rebuild momentum toward lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.<br />But that starts with the North Korean leader's decision.<br /><br />Park Hee-jun, Arirang News.<br />
