Panama Canal expansion celebrates 3rd anniversary with transit of 6500 ships

Madrid, Jun 26 (EFE).- The expansion of the Panama Canal marks its third anniversary with a transit availability of 99.7% in the last 36 months and the passing of  6,500 ships, meaning the construction firms have met the objective set by the Canal Authority - 99.6% -, according to Spanish company Sacyr on Wednesday.<br />The consortium Grupo Unidos por el Canal, led by Sacyr, was in charge of the project, which was built between 2009 and 2016, for the construction of a new set of locks 427 metres long, 55 metres wide and 18.3 metres deep, which allows post-Panamax ships with a larger load capacity to pass.
