김정은, 왜 판문점行 선택했나... 북미관계 개선 돌파구 의도?<br /><br />President Trump's proposal of a meeting with Kim Jong-un came at the very last minute on Twitter.<br />The North Korean leader is not known for spontaneous diplomacy, so what made him agree to go?<br />Oh Soo-young explains. <br />An impromptu one-on-one with Donald Trump may have been the very opportunity Kim Jong-un was waiting for. <br />Upon their surprise handshake and meeting at the inter-Korean truce village of Panmunjeom, the North Korean leader said the U.S. President's sudden tweet requesting a meet up came as a surprise.<br />And he appeared to extend an invite of his own. <br />" When the time is right, if President Trump has a chance to visit Pyeongyang, it would leave a great mark and change the political history of the world"<br />Observers say the unexpected meet-up may have been unplanned, but it came at an opportune time for the North Korean leader.<br />"If you look at the North Korean daily Rodong Sinmun , it says Kim accepted the U.S. President's request and agreed to meet him, so that would significantly help him reinforce his status as a dignified leader to the North Korean people. Also, in terms of denuclearization talks, it seems Kim wanted direct, one-on-one communication with Trump, not through his aides like Pompeo or Bolton. So this provided that breakthrough."<br />Fresh momentum for dialogue was created between Pyeongyang and Washington through Kim and Trump's historic encounter at Panmunjeom.<br />And it's notable how this momentum was revived by the interaction between the top leaders themselves, rather than between working-level officials,... coming after their recent exchange of friendly letters.<br />Oh Soo-young, Arirang News. <br />
