KABUL — The Black Hornet nano-unmanned aerial system will be deployed to troops in the 82nd Airborne Division in Afghanistan this month on a trial basis, Stars and Stripes reports.<br /><br />The unmanned aerial drone is 6.6 inches in length and weigh less than 33 grams, Army Technology reports.<br /><br />The device features two electro-optic cameras and a fused thermal LED light night imager.<br /><br />According to Army Technology, this allows the aerial vehicle to transmit HD videos using night vision to allow soldiers to survey their surroundings while in combat.<br /><br />The drone can be launched in 30 to 120 seconds with a flight endurance of up to 25 minutes. The device is capable of flying at speeds of up to 24.49 kilometers per hour with a range of 2 kilometers.<br /><br />The U.S. Department of Defense plans to extend the use of the hand-held drones to most of its ground force if the trial proves successful, according to Army Technology.
