Chinese border guards are installing malware<br />on tourist’s phones that collects calendar entries,<br />phone contacts, call logs and text messages. The malware is not hidden, but<br />rather appears on the user’s home<br />screen as a standard application icon. According to a Maya Wang, a senior researcher<br />at Human Rights Watch, this application is an<br />example of “pervasive mass surveillance.” Maya Wang, via 'Vice' Authorities are believed to be looking<br />for files that contain Islamic extremist<br />content or Islamic material in general. The increased surveillance is reportedly tied<br />to a current campaign against the Muslim<br />population in the Xinjiang region of China.
