A group of residents were caught riding a giant leatherback turtle on a beach in Indonesia.<br /><br />Footage shows the locals taking turns to sit on top of a turtle in a horrifying scene on July 5. <br /><br />The animal in distress can be seen struggling to move across the sand before being released in the ocean.<br /><br />According to a witness, the turtle was captured by residents after laying eggs on Asukweri beach.<br /><br />The outrageous incident came to light earlier this week and there has been no official statement from local authorities yet. <br /><br />Leatherback turtles, the largest of all living turtles, are now facing extinction with their population declining precipitously particularly in the Pacific.
