Korean shipyards won orders totaling 340-thousand compensated gross tons... to build six ships in June.<br />That's some 100-thousand compensated gross tons more than that gained by China... which ranked second place.<br />Japan ranked third with 90-thousand compensated gross tons to build five ships.<br />Korea's top ranking comes amid a dip in global ship orders... which fell by 41-percent on-year last month.<br />Local shipbuilders are trying to maintain their top position in the highly competitive global market by building mega container ships.<br />One of the nation's major shipbuilder, Samsung Heavy Industries said it set a new record for building the world's largest container ship.<br />The company said the vessel,... the first of six units ordered by Mediterranean Shipping Company a Swiss shipper,... left its shipyard on Saturday.<br />The container vessel, named M-S-C Gulsun, is 400 meters long, 61-point-5 meters wide, and 33-point-2 meters high.<br />The vessel is capable of carrying 23-thousand-756 containers, each measuring more than six-meters long.<br />Kim Ji-yeon, Arirang News.<br />
