Canadian man survives plunge into Niagara Falls

NIAGARA FALLS, CANADA — A man was swept over Niagara Falls and miraculously survived a fall down into the waters below, on Tuesday, July 9.<br /><br />Niagara Falls Park Police tweeted they were called to rescue the man at the waterfall at 4:00 a.m.<br /><br />They rushed to the scene and watched the man, identified as Canadian, as he climbed over the retaining wall at the Horseshoe Falls and was swept away by the water. <br /><br />Officials then searched the lower river basin and found the guy beneath the Journey Behind the Falls observation platform, the Buffalo News reports.<br /><br />The police said the man was "sitting on rocks" at the edge of the water. He was rescued with non-life threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital for further assessment.<br /><br />Jim Diodati, mayor of Niagara Falls, Ontario told the Buffalo News he believes record high water levels may have saved the man's life.<br /><br />"When Lake Erie is higher and flowing more robustly to Lake Ontario, there is a better chance of missing the massive boulders under the Horseshoe Falls," Diodati told the newspaper.<br /><br />Authorities have yet to reveal the identity of the man due to privacy laws.
